Does Disk Monitor slow down the machine it runs on?

No. When requesting S.M.A.R.T. information Disk Monitor loads a CPU for 1-2% depending on PC performance.

Why S.M.A.R.T. attributes for my hard disk drive unavailable?

There are two possible reasons:
— The HDD does not support S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics.
— S.M.A.R.T. is turned off in BIOS and operating system is Windows XP, 2003 or 2000.

Do I need Administrator privileges to run Active@ Hard Disk Monitor?

If your operating system is Windows OS, for FREE version you need administrator's privileges; for PRO version you need to have registry writing rights (if you want to start an administrator module at Windows startup). In all other cases a regular user privileges are sufficient.

Do I need to open any port if a firewall is running on my machine?

Yes. By default Disk Monitor uses port 5000 (could be changed) for remote disks monitoring. You can select a checkbox at installation time to open the port automatically. If it is not done during installation, you need to open it manually.

What is the difference between HDD Health, Health/Performance, Performance and Information attributes?

Health shows a probability of hard disk drives normal functioning. Performance shows what is the disk's performance compared to the reference one as specified by a manufacturer (as the number of search errors and substituted sectors increases the performance drops down). Health/Performance combines the first two attributes. It says that decreasing of disk performance correlates with the risk of failure. Information is not considered an important attributes by a HDD manufacturer. Even if it reaches the critical value, the performance and reliability are not diminished.

I have an internal network. Can I monitor SMART parameters in this network from outside?

Yes. Setup your router to redirect an external IP to the internal one and enable remote SMART disk monitoring. To distinguish two computers which will share the same external IP, you may use different port numbers.

Can I find out about the state of my disk without an administrator's module?

Yes. The administrator's module is required to configure the service and display all disks' parameters. You can setup the service to send you a SMTP notification by e-mail when a threshold value is reached.

There are several computers in my network. Administrator module is set to monitor one of the hard disks, however after I reboot the system the module reports that connection is failed.

Normally computers use dynamic IPs issued by a DHCP server. After a reboot your machine may obtain a different IP address. Use static IP instead of a dynamic one in this situation.

At the first start Disk Monitor shows incorrect device work time.

Disks made by different HDD manufacturers store their work time in different formats and Disk Monitor needs about 2 minutes to identify the time format and update power-on hours counter.
